My research in this area focusses on language teaching methodology and pedagogy, teacher professionalisation and training, and motivation to study languages. I am also interested in the pedagogically grounded use of digital teaching and learning methods. I was one of the editors of an open-access book on innovative language teaching and am currently working with Martin Durrell (Manchester) on a new edition of Hammer’s German Grammar and Usage, one of the major German grammar textbooks in the anglophone world. In one of my recent papers, I reflect on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the delivery of language programmes and the digitisation of language teaching at UK universities.
Like many other language academics in the UK, I also work on language teaching policy and am a passionate advocate for the study of languages and cultures and the arts and humanities in general.
In June 2023, my colleague Rasha Soliman and I organised a national symposium on language education in the (post-)digital era, funded by the University Council for Languages (UCFL).
