Reducing Inequalities Through Education (RITE)

Educational attainment gaps linked to social inequalities are entrenched and widening. RITE brings together researchers working across linguistics, psychology, and education to investigate how inequalities can best be reduced across different stages of learning (from the early years through to further education), and in both formal and informal settings.

RITE's work spans four interconnected themes:

early identification and assessment;
language-rich environments and literacy development;
evidence-based classroom practice and support; and
systems change through intervention evaluation and workforce development.

Across these themes, RITE develops inclusive assessment tools, examines what characterises effective language environments for children facing disadvantage, translates cognitive and developmental science into practical classroom strategies, and rigorously evaluates interventions designed to improve outcomes for children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

Through stakeholder partnerships and collaborative priority-setting with organisations including Leeds City Council, the Education Endowment Foundation, the National Literacy Trust, and the N8 Child of the North network, RITE builds an evidence base to inform regional and national policy, with the long-term aim of improving children and young people's educational attainment and life chances.
