Data Analysis with R Training Workshop - L@L PGR Group

On Tuesday 10 June 2026, the Language@Leeds PGR Group hosted a beginner-level R training workshop targeting social scientists led by Dr Chris Norton. The session brought together 16 postgraduate researchers from across the University for an introduction to R and its applications in research.

The two-hour workshop focused on learning through practice. PGRs were guided through the basics of R and worked directly with data, gaining experience in data wrangling, troubleshooting common issues, and carrying out simple analyses. The session was designed for researchers with little or no prior experience of programming, creating a supportive environment in which participants could experiment, learn from mistakes, and build confidence with the software. The hands-on approach was particularly useful, with lively discussion and engagement throughout the session. The event also provided an opportunity for PGRs from different disciplines to connect and share experiences of working with data in their research.

We would like to thank Dr Chris Norton for delivering an engaging and accessible introduction to R, and all PGRs for making the event a success. Given the positive feedback from participants, the Language@Leeds PGR Group may explore the possibility of running a series of workshops to help PGRs continue developing their R and data analysis skills for doctoral research.
