Towards a socio-semiotic landscape of trans, inter and multicultural layering in Kirkgate Market

Speaker: Elisabetta Adami

Venue: LHRI Seminar Room 1

Leeds Voices is the first phase of a trans-disciplinary programme to explore modes of accommodation across diverse public spaces within the city of Leeds. Taking a multimodal focus on superdiversity, this project focuses on the voices of Leeds Kirkgate Market – a historical linguistic/cultural hub for dense inter-ethnic exchanges that is currently undergoing rapid change. Over this Seminar Series, we consider processes of exceptional multi-ethnic accommodation and micro-interaction in Kirkgate Market within a wider discursive context of inter-ethnic conflict as increasingly normative.

Phase 1 (October – December 2015) of the Leeds Voices project is funded by the Sadler Seminar Series
