Call for Participants: Research Workshop on Multimodality

Date

With Professor Gunther Kress and Professor Theo Van Leeuwen

9.00am – 1pm, Tuesday 16th May 2017, Baines Wing SR (1.13)

Proposals due 3 April, 2017

The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies and the School of Media and Communication will be hosting Professor Gunther Kress (Institute of Education, University College London) and Professor Theo Van Leeuwen (University of Southern Denmark, Odense / University of Technology Sydney), the two main founders of multimodality, social semiotics and multimodal discourse analysis.

As part of their visit, Professor Kress and Professor Van Leeuwen will offer a workshop for doctoral and
postdoctoral researchers who are using or intend to use multimodality in their work. The workshop will address the following questions and related issues:

- Are you using or do you intend to use multimodality in your own research?

- Are you trying to see how multimodal analysis can help you answer your research questions?

- Are you in the process of figuring out which multimodal theories and methods would be best

for analysing your data?

- Are you trying to integrate multimodal analysis with other approaches?

- Are you struggling with handling, coding, transcribing or analysing your data multimodally?

This workshop offers you the opportunity to present and discuss your problem with others working
in multimodality and to receive feedback from Professor Kress and Professor Van Leeuwen.

The format of the workshop will be hands-on. Each researcher will be allotted 7 minutes to present
one specific problem related to the use of multimodality in their work, followed by 10 minutes devoted to feedback and discussion. Problems may relate to any stage of your research: from the formulation of research questions, and the choice of theories and methods, to the collection and handling of both data and analysis, and up to interpretation and findings. Rather than presenting your whole research project, we expect you to discuss a specific issue/problem that you would like help and advice on. This may be at any stage of your work, including very early research design. We very much welcome also the showing of specific data, if you need advice and suggestions on how to analyse them in relation to your research question.

If you want to participate in the workshop, please send a brief proposal (200 words max.)
by April 3 2017 to Elisabetta Adami (e.adami@leeds.ac.uk) and Giorgia Aiello (g.aiello@leeds.ac.uk). The proposal should focus on the specific problem in your research that you wish to discuss at the workshop. Please include:

- your name

- the School you are affiliated with

- the year you are at in your PhD/PostDoc

- the title of your PhD/PostDoc research project

- one sentence presenting the object of your research

- the specific problem/issue you wish to discuss and you are seeking advice on

Given its hands-on character, the workshop will have a limited amount of places.

The workshop is co-funded by the Centre for Translation Studies, Language@Leeds, the School of
Media and Communication, and the PGR funds of the School of Media and Communication and the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies.
